Reviews of Routers

zdnet.co.uk Title: Netgear DG834G

Pros: May be your only choice if you can't get ADSL, Excellent installation experience

Cons: Expensive, Dial-up connection required for Internet access, TV viewing software is basic, Can't network TV and radio

Verdict: If you can't get ADSL, consider a one-way satellite broadband connection such as AVC Broadband. However it's expensive, and your computer needs wired links to the DVB decoder and the phone line (for dial-up uplink connection)... Read Full Review.

Summary: The DG834G combines five network functions in a single box ? ADSL modem, router, switch, firewall and 802.11g wireless access point. Despite some dodgy firmware updates, it's one of the better single-box router solutions on the market.

techradar.com Title: Netgear DG834N

Pros: Superb wireless range

Cons: Promised speeds never materialised

Verdict: That's still underwhelming in terms of the speeds that we've been promised, but it does mean that you can stream HD movies

Summary: Buy this and you'll almost certainly be able to upgrade to the final standard when it's ratified

cnet.com.au Title: Netgear RangeMax Next Wireless Router WNR834B Review - Routers

Pros: Simple URL-based web configurator, Sleek design lines, Decent throughput

Cons: Internal antennae make it harder to do positional adjustment, Loses WEP at higher speed settings, Doesn't live up to the promises of 802.11n

Summary: Netgear's RangeMax Next Wireless Router edges ever closer to the promise of 802.11n, but it still doesn't quite live up to the hype.

techradar.com Title: Netgear DG834GT

Pros: Good data rate

Cons: Not the fastest overall

Verdict: Using a chip doubler, the Netgear can effectively gain an increased data throughput over that offered by a standard 54Mbps connection. What this means in practise is you'll regularly achieve a data rate of 38Mbps. This is a more than acceptable rate, espe

Summary: Using a chip doubler, the Netgear can effectively gain an increased data throughput
